WHERE DID THE TERM

"PARROT HEAD"

COME FROM?

Once when performing at Timberwolf Amphitheatre at Kings Island in Ohio, Jimmy commented on all those crazy folks in the crowd from the Cincinnati area wearing Hawaiian shirts and parrot hats and who keep coming back to every show.  "Just like DeadHeads," Jimmy commented.

Coral-Reefer Timothy B. Schmidt (who also played Bass for the Eagles between stints with the Coral-Reefer Band) replied, "Yea, Parrot Heads!"

PHIP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

PHIP is pleased to announce the 2010 Parrot Head Scholarship program.

Application Deadline is March 15th.

The Parrot Head Scholarship Program was established in 2008 as a benefit to the members of PHIP sactioned Parrot Head clubs.  Current members of an officially sanctioned Parrot Head club, and their children, grandchildren, and wards can apply for the scholarship.

In 2010, the scholarship will make three awards:  $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000.  These funds are to help with post-secondary education and may be used for tuition, books or living expenses at an accredited four-year university or college of the student's choice.

What does it take to win one of these scholarships?  First, the student must send an application to PHIP by March 15.  The application has some short answer questions and an essay.  HIghest consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate previous examples of participation and leadership for Charity, Environmental, Civic and/or Parrot Head Club volunteer work.  High consideration to applicants who will be pursuing a course of study that leads to a degree, certification or credentials.  All applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee, which will select the winners.  The decision of the Committee will be final.

In an effort to ensure fairness, PHIP will this year be making it a blind application.  Applications will be sent to PHIP Secretary Deb McCall; she will assign a number to the application and remove the cover sheet that will have the applicant's name.

The application and application instructions can be found on the PHIP website - www.PHIP.com  Click on PHIP Scholarship on the drop down menu.  This will take you to the Application instruction site which includes the application link.

ABOUT US:

Pirates on the Panhandle (PoP) is a chapter of Parrot Heads In Paradise, Inc. (or PHiP).   For more information on PHiP, go to www.PHIP.com

With a total of 237 Parrot Head Clubs nationwide, we collectively raised for and/or donated approximately $3.1 million to charitable organizations in 2008. Equally significant, Parrot Heads carried on the tradition of volunteerism as 2008 saw chapters worldwide donate an estimated 175,000 man-hours to philanthropic and environmental activities. The upshot … In the period 2002 – 2008, Parrot Head Clubs have collectively contributed more than $16.4 million and more than 2.3 million man-hours to aid our communities, our environment and help our fellow man!

                 PURPOSE

The purpose of our organization is to promote friendships and organize social activities for people with similar interest, including enjoying the lifestyle portrayed by Jimmy Buffett’s music.

Pirates on the Panhandle encourages its members to provide a variety of volunteer efforts locally, for community environmental causes and doing so with a social blend.  In the process of building new relationships with friends and family activities, we believe in leaving something positive behind as we “Party With A Purpose!”

On Being A Parrot Head

Salt Shaker.jpg

"What is a Parrot Head?"

What is a Parrot Head? they ask, when we appear in mass
What makes you wear those crazy clothes,
and imitate an ass?

The answer is not simple, but then again, it is.
Tis really just a frame of mind around Jimmy Buffett´s biz.

It´s sitting in a traffic jam, and picturing a beach,
A far off island in the sea, that´s just beyond your reach
A flowered shirt, a crazy hat, a cheeseburger in hand.
A beach chair at an awesome park, with a Trop-rock music band.

By day we may be doctors and lawyers, and don a 3 piece suit,
By night the margaritas flow, and grass skirts sure look cute.
With sailing songs and steele drum beats, the stress can melt away
And if you haven´t tried it,

don´t knock it as they say.

We celebrate the pirate life, the hula girls and rum.

A bunch of crazy drinkin´ folk, we have been called by some.
Dancing barefoot, squeezing limes, it is a Tropical circus.
But hold the bashing and keep in mind, we Party with a Purpose.

So welcome to this phlocking, and we hope that you´ll be kind.
Beyond the beaks and feathers, you will certainly no doubt find
The greatest bunch of people that take charity to heart,
That welcome anyone that has the urge to play a part.

Who Are These People????

Club members come from a variety of backgrounds. Most are professionals, with an average age range between the mid-twenties to the mid-fifties.

Although membership numbers vary greatly from club to club, from all accounts, our clubs have an average membership of 150.

The real beauty of the clubs is that they seem to attract exactly the right kind of people - people who, through their attraction to Jimmy Buffett's music also have a number of other interests in common, most importantly the desire to give something back to the community in which they live.

SPECIAL FEATURES FOR MEMBERS

We want to let you know about a special feature of our club website.  Members can log in and be able to use a number of features only available to members.

Currently, the only features available are being able to change/update your membership profile and to participate in the blog page.  In the future, we will let you know of new features.

Following is the process to log-in:

The first time a member wants to log in, you will need to use the email you put on your club application as the Email.  You will then need to click on "Forgot Password" and the system will send a temporary password to that email address.  Note:  If a couple provided only one email address on their application, they will only have access to one name that the email address is set up under.  The system does require an email for every name in the database, so we had to set up fake emails for the other name for entering  into the database purposes.

If you only provided one email and wish to add another email for the other family member, email our Membership Director, Lea Shaw, and she will be happy to update that name.  Her email address is:  Finsr@bellsouth.net   Let us know if you have problems with the database or don't remember what email you provided for the database.
